Wood Fired Creatures
Date
2005-2018
2024 to present
In 2005 I became somewhat disenchanted with my pieces and the glazes. The process for glazing large voluminous pieces of sculpture, and getting a consistent layer of glaze, meant using a compressor and sprayer.
I took a year off to recoup and during that time I became acquainted with Hiroshi Ogawa and
wood firing. Loading my plain bisque pieces and allowing melted ash to glaze them was a huge game changer for me. The surface complexity and interest caused by the atmosphere in the Anagama was the obvious answer and became my primary way to high fire my pieces. The surfaces became more stone-like, ancient and eventually changed the direction and the focus of the objects I decided to make.
In 2018 Hiroshi retired and I stopped wood firing. In 2024 I started wood firing again at the newly built "Train Kiln" at Woodland Sun, Jacksonville OR.
